Is Cassette tape sounds good, better than CD? Or even vinyl?

I have been listening to music since 1978, when vinyl was the dominant format. Over the past 50 years, I have explored various formats, including vinyl, CDs, and cassettes. I also have experience with reel-to-reel tapes, which I believe offer the best sound quality. However, original reel-to-reel recordings can be quite expensive, so I primarily use vinyl as my main source of music.

Recently, I have taken up collecting vintage cassette decks because I believe they can sound better than vinyl in some cases. There are many vinyl enthusiasts who often claim that cassette decks "eat" tapes and produce a lot of hissing noise. Some even argue that even the cheapest turntable can outperform my cassette deck.

I recently posted a message on Facebook about vintage cassette decks, asking why I still enjoy using them. I was pleased to find numerous supportive comments, which reassured me that I am not alone in my appreciation for cassette decks.

Here are some of the comments I received:

These are some of the comment.

1.      Two wheels are better than one !

2.      Cassette are awesome 。

3.      No, he never has listened to a good cassette deck. Maybe his experience is one of the early pre-recorded tapes. I had a friend ask "who the hell listens to cassettes anymore" I guess other than her ignorance, she had never listened to Mitsubishi Dragons, oh well John Meyer in terms of what type of source we prefer to listen to, yes. But to make an empirical statement that vinyl is superior to tape, particularly a cheap vinyl setup, just reveals a deep ignorance of the technological facts.

4.      Correct! A friend - self-confessed cassette hater, owner of some really high-end Hi Fi, listened to one of my decks (average quality 1990s two head Yamaha) with a pre-recorded cassette and was astonished!

5.      A well-recorded cassette on quality tape from a digital source with proper use of Dolby NR (or dbx if you like) can absolutely beat the sound quality from even the best LP on the best TT with the best cartridge.

6.      Yes, simply like that: The cassette sounds better (even at lower quality). Insiders know that.

7.      Cris Schulze just the commercial  World kill the good

Cassette music Media as no one invest on manufacturing hin end cassette deck. I make mix tapes on my Teac to play in my Toyota on my Blaupunkt. I earnestly don't care what anyone else thinks about it.

8.      Some of my Cassettes sound better than my Records, depends how it's recorded and on what system it's being played on

9.      A good cassette deck, properly aligned to the tape used, using high quality tapes and recorded properly from any source, including vinyl, will produce great results.  There could be some minor trade offs, but excellent nevertheless. That's ok. We don't want everybody to know what we know... 😉 I have some cassettes that I recorded with my BEOCORD back in the eighties that still sound amazing. Bob Hadden l was just listening to a recording of Love Over Gold made in 1984 on fairly modest equipment and it still sounds great.

10.  My first cassette deck was an Advent, which I enjoyed a lot. Then, I got a Nakamichi, and enjoyed that, even more! I also added a dbx noise reduction unit which really lowered the noise floor.

11.  I’ve been slowly assembling my “retirement” system and decided that the spot that the cassette occupied should be a digital server/streamer in this generation.

12.  I do still want something as great as the Nakamichi was and am probably going with Aurender.ACS10. It comes with up to 24TB of storage and the ability to rip all my CDs to that huge SSD drive so everything but my LPs will be accessible from my listening chair. After all, this is the retirement system!-)

13.  Then we hope he spends a fortune buying audiophile grade stylus and re-issues of popular LPs over and over.

14.  Whenever somebody says something like that to me I just say "you are not doing it right".

15.  Tell the guy that he's absolutely right and that he should stick to the turntables. In that case we have one competitor less for the wonderful tape decks 😁 And if he won't listen then ask him how he would imagine a turntable in a car - that being before the CD-player was invented 🤣

In my opinion, I dislike the crackling sound of vinyl, while I barely notice the hissing of cassettes. Thus, I prefer cassette tapes. Records require RIAA equalization to suppress low frequencies during recording, which can distort the original musical form. Setting up a turntable for optimal performance is almost like rocket science, and the cost can be ten times higher than that of a cassette deck. The Nakamichi, with its magnetic head azimuth alignment, can reproduce recordings faithfully.

When I listen to cassette tapes, I find it more relaxing. Vinyl is less user-friendly; maintaining a good cassette deck requires regular tasks like cleaning the heads and washing the tapes. The drawback is that it's not easy to manufacture a high-quality cassette deck, and if a new production lot were to be made for the Dragon model, I believe the price would start at around HKD$100,000.

I own the HK Wing Sing Tsai Chin "Old Song" cassette tape (Taiwan edition) and the Sanyo B series CD of the same title. It sounds best on my Nakamichi 1000ZXL or Dragon. My vinyl system consists of a Wilson Benesch ART turntable and a Koetsu Onyx cartridge, which is more of an average setup than a high-end one.

You might wonder how a cassette deck sounds. It’s warm, comfortable, has a wide range, is vivid, natural, pleasant, and offers a more stereophonic experience. You have to listen to believe it.

My Current Collection:

Akai GX95

Braun C4

Harmon Kardon CD291

Marantz SD551

Nakamichi 1000ZXL x2

Nakamichi Dragon x1

Nakamichi CR7

Nakamichi CR40

Nakamichi LX5

Pioneer T-1000

Revox H1

Revox B710 MK II

Teac 112 Mk II x3

Teac V9000

Teac Z6000

Yamaha KX-1200

Conclusion:

In terms of faithful reproduction, I rank the formats as follows: reel-to-reel, cassette tape, vinyl, and then CD.

Cassette tape collection is real fun

Cassette tapes are all fun and I used to listen into the either vinyl or cassette format, less for CD now.
As Vinyl and cassette are more analogue and sound could be better than format of the CD.

Comparison with the world best cassette decks Nakamichi 1000ZXL Dragon, Revox B710 MKII and Pioneer T770s and T1000S

Comparison in Price

Highest to lowest Naka 1000ZXL, Dragon, Revox B710MK II, Pioneer T1000S, Pioneer T770S

Sound performance

Nakamichi 1000 ZXL, Pioneer T1000S, Dragon, Revox B710-MK II, Pioneer T770S

Outlook

Best is Nakamichi 1000 ZXL, Dragon, Revox B710 MK II, Pioneer T1000S

Price

Highest to lowest Nakamichi 1000 ZXL, Revox B710MK II, Dragon, Pioneer T1000S, Pioneer T770S

Ease of use

Dragon (with Remote control), Pioneer T1000S auto door open close, T770S (same operation as T1000S), Revox B710MK II, Nakamichi 1000ZXL

Difference between Pioneer T1000S and T770S is same in operation, but the internal construction and use of electronics components is T1000S better than the T770s, T1000 is using a lot of honeycomb copper base plate and isolation plate.

Comparison with Dragon and Pioneer T1000S

Dragon is 3 motors direct drive, T1000 is 3 motors belt driven

Dragon Frequency response is 20-22KHZ Vs Pioneer is 20-30KHZ both on metal tapes

Wow and Flutter Dragon is 0.04% Vs Pioneer is 0.022%

THD of dragon is 0.8% VS Pioneer is 0.6%

weight of Dragon is 9.5Kg, Vs Pioneer T1000 is 8.6Kg

Proce of Dragon on 1983-1995 was DM 4,150 to 4500 Vs Pioneer was only DM 2200 in 1993

Two Big Audio magazine nominated Pioneer T1000S as the Reference Cassette deck as the only one.

In Short Pioneer T1000S is better in performance than Dragon.

But few people know about it and Dragon has been in the market for 13 years and was famous and its price is 2 times higher than Pioneer, so most people think Dragon is better deck than Pioneer T1000S.

This is purely my personal experience on this only, all are great decks.

I think price will be up tomorrow.

Goldmund Mimesis 2 pre amplifier

This kind of amplifier all composed with discrete transistors in the signal path similar as Mark Levinson No. 26S. What I I think this could be having a controlling performance even after many years, tougher in reliability.  As the transistor itself carries its own task to do them amplifying the signals with a much bigger area or space for the electrons flow and heat dissipation. There is less Miller feedback between collector and gate than an IC would make... from what I understand. The dual supply of this design would give better channel separation.

Listening comparison with Goldmund 27.3 preamp, I think the sound is similar in the first day, this is second day, the Mimesis 2 is doing running in. The Volume of bass is getting warmer and more in intensity. Mid and High is more transparent, especially the weak gimble sound, its tonal quality as light as a feather, bass is full volumetric in intensity.

Let's see more a few days.

New found long lost Hi Fi fun: Cassette tape

recently by occasion, I bought a Nakamichi 1000ZXL, wow, to my surprise, it is better than all my CD system in terms of music reproduction liveness, transparency and fun. Many people says that isn't true, well, to my friend who is in love with cassette knows it. Until you try you know.

to me Vinyl is 100%, Cassette is 90% and CD is 80% only.

Well, only open reel system I have no experience so it is not included in the comparison. I know is is on top of vinyl. But I don't know if there is enough recorded tape for me to puchase.

Nakamichi 1000ZXL computing cassette tape deck

咗套Critical Mass Systems 嘅Centre Stage釘腳落部中道 Nakamichi 1000ZXL 度,果然低音實在左! 聽”A fistful of dollars & “for a few dollars more”.

Wilson Benesch Original Turn table

Wilson Benesch made a reputation for itself as one of the world's advance manufacturers of analog playback gear, first with its innovative turntable, then with its unique—some said "impossible"—ACT One tonearm (now replaced by the 2.0). Both make use of composite carbon-fiber technology. (ACT stands for Advanced Composite Technology.)  I am using this Turn table for all my Vinyl Records.

Why use carbon-fiber laminate in place of metal? It's said to absorb resonant energy instead of passing it on, or reflecting it back, to other materials with which it comes into contact. According to W-B, carbon-fiber composite is extremely stiff—stronger than titanium, with only half the mass of aluminum. Of course, like any material, a carbon-fiber laminate does have a resonant frequency—a relatively high one, which W-B says can be more easily controlled with careful damping. The resonant frequency of such a composite depends on the amount and orientation of the carbon-fiber cloth material and the resins used to hold it in place.

The original W-B turntable that I am using uses a sub-chassis of honeycombed Nomex to which a carbon-fiber skin is laminated—much like the body of a racing car. That, combined with other sophisticated innovations, brings its price up to about $3300 (not including arm). The original 'table has garnered extremely positive reviews worldwide. Domestically, it is available only in combination with the $2995 ACT 2 arm for $6295.

Now W-B enters the "mid-budget" arena with the Circle turntable—a totally new, quite unique and compact design that sells for $1995 fitted with a Rega RB300 arm, or $2995 with W-B's new ACT 0.5 arm (the combination reviewed here).

The two barbecue stoves on the floor ain't cheap!

clearaudio turntable, it does not look like Stattment.

The Buk Missile one at each side is a powerful show piece in the Room. I Like the ATC monitor

Does this Chinese made Turntable looks like the one on top of this post?

Disappointing Audio Note likely not a good set-up. The Weak point is the Loudspeaker.

Ortofon integrated Amp, cheapo China made offer.

Good to see the Koetsu Jade Cartridge, List Price USD$10,000

EMT cartridge, isn't cheap at all.

Happy to see Kiseki Purpleheart cartridge

The Hi Fi Show is huge, a lot of Participants, But I did not see Audio Space, Probably Peter is busy with his own issues. Many youth come to the shop for the handphone,  Hi End Head phone up to a USD$5,000, what a price, does it worth!? I have tried yet.

Many Turn Tables are there, many people does not understand why?  I know as the CD and MP3 does not able to provide that Analogue feeling we want to get.
Hi End Audio makers cannot just focus on the hi end customer, they have switched to the mid-low end demand on loudspeaker and mini system.

Hi End Audio maker produces super mammoth like Balder’s mono block each has a output stage of 10 pieces of 300B.
Glad to see a lot like 20% of Analague Products in the show, a lot of Analogue Players Ortofon, Koetsu, EMT, Kiseki, SME, Clearaudio, EAR are in the show…

I found that the “Royal ballet” LP is there on sales, Mono is HKD$28,000. Stereo (Later release) is HKD$18,000! And I met the Shanling booth Boss, Ms. Lee and Kuen, (Audiotronics) Mrs. Lee told me ; Hey, you LP is now selling at HKD$28,000, the time I sold you was just HKD$7,000!”
True, Simon Lee sold me that Album 8 years ago at HKD$7,000. Well, that isn’t small amount of money at that time… However, this is the Gem of the Classic Music, to be a LP collector, I think I need to keep that.

UK Lancashire 33.3 Phono, a beautiful example of expressing "Less is More!"

The Lancashire 33.3 is mounted on top of 4 isolated, under operation!

Two 12AX7 on the left, power regulator for heater mounted on the centre of the chassis and 5 smoothing power capacitors and a nothing more... no wire at all.

Two Telefunken ECC803S are being used valued HKD$8,000

This is an UK hand Made Phono Unit. “33.3”
Right price, right design with simple is best concept, isolated power supply. Limited edition gramophone / pick up preamplifier. The '33.3 Limited Edition' Limited to just 33 examples, this Moving Magnet phono stage has been designed for the absolute best sound quality per £. It is designed and built in Lancashire, and boasts some sound enhancing features.

Obviously all valve (2x ECC83 double triode Class A operation). Each channel is assembled on it's own individual board, mono construction if you like. The shortest signal path possible, with no need for internal wire or connections, maximizing low level detail and lowering distortion.

A separate power supply is included, minimizing hum field and power supply induced noise. All components are high tolerance and very carefully selected. All are handmade, and all are subject to 100 hour burn in and test. The design was to make longevity and low noise a priority over absolute gain. Unlike some of our competitors, the sound quality of the '33.3' will not deteriorate with age. The circuit uses active RIAA equalization, again using the highest tolerance matched components throughout.

· Compact size: 29 wide x 17 deep x 11 tall (CM)
· Optimized for Moving Magnet (S&B M.C. step-up transformers fitted on request)
· Active RIAA Equalization curve
· 2x Class "A" Twin Triode Valves

B & W 805S loudspeaker

I have been carefully listened for one day, and this is a line of High definition, highly accurate, clear, musical and yet we can tell detail of individual organs position,

Speed is high and I am sure you don't feel this is the “Tube Amplifier that gives you a slow and bloomy picture of the music!”

The Violin is has texture of a Violin, exactly the size of a Violin, and not the Viola or micro Violin!

These are the testing LPs, and I am here to announce the true essence of music is not being to judge by weight, size of the complexity of the circuitry…

Honesty, I studied Electronics and one should know the shortest audio path could give you less loss in signal and higher gain in S/N ratio!
This 33.3 demonstrate the true spirit of “ Less is more!” mentioning about the price! WOW, it is the price of your power cable only.

I am not bluffing, if you had gust and not money, well, I can borrow mine or I can refer you to buy this

Likely the best best High End Phono Amplifier money can buy…
Of course, I used TELEFUNKEN 803S on all stages all amplifiers… that is to be considered,,, as I feel nothing can beat ECC803S tubes, only that I cannot afford to put all…
But it is like Opium (though I have not yet tried Opium), you will addicted to it…I believe.
Come and open your ears to listen…

Testing records
Listen to this Scottish Fantasia, how Campoli plays his Violin Corrrectly!
An expensive LP that is about now HKD$3,000!

Listen to the true natual voice of Tsrai Chin when she was fresh in singing back in 1973
I like the last song on Side A; "Mysterious Girl"

Ruggiero plays The Four Season using 14 rare Stradivari Instruments that worth US$20M!
a MCA LP.

Listen to Rossine : William Tell Overture -Finale on No.1 on side A and Dubussy :Clair De Lune to see how quiet the music baclkground is though the LP quality is not too good.
